Dhaka District

Narayanganj district town stands on the bank of the river Shitalaksha and located at 23&34& N 90&27&E & 24&15 &N 90&59& E. Hindu leader Bikol Lal Pande bought this area from East India Company at 1766. He donated the land in the name of God Narayan. Therefore this area was named as Narayanganj. The district is only 20 Kilometer south-east of Dhaka city. It is well communicated with Dhaka by road and railway. The river Shitalaksha flows in the east and Buriganga flows in the south and west of the district. It consists of 5 Upazila, 7 Pourashava and forty one Unions. The area of the district is 759.57 sq.km. There are 881 Mouza and 1374 village in the district. Narayanganj is the biggest river port of the country. It is an important town for trade and commerce. Sonargaon Upazila was the capital of Bengal during Isha Khan’s regime. The archaeological and Historical feturs of the district are graveyard of Sultan Giusuddin Azam Shah (1389-1411), Mosque of Saleh Baba (1481), Mosque of Goaldi (1519), Mosque of Sultan Jalal uddin Fateh Shah (1484), Killa of Isha Khan at Haziganj, Sonakanda Fort etc. Besides Shitalaksha and Buriganga, Balu and Dakeshwary rivers flow through this district. Narayanganj is known as Dandee of the east from British rule for Jute industry. Now a days thousands of industry such as Garments, small and medium factories plays an important role in national economy. Well known "Jamdani" sharees are made here. Besides, 20% of country’s power is generated from Narayanganj.
